Three grades of sanding and polishing did wonders for the instrument. The first sanding was with 400-grit paper and soapy water. The second was 600-grit, and the third was with pumice and oil. After a thorough cleaning with a damp paper towel and dry wipe, it was ready for the second coat of varnish.

This coat went on very smoothly. I used the same mixture as for the first coat, but being very careful to maintain even more consistent strokes. The colour still is not nearly what Jayne had in mind, but is perhaps closer than before.
